The Basics of Jewelry Plating
Electroplating is the process of depositing a thin layer of precious metal onto a base metal surface using electrical current. In fashion jewelry manufacturing, the most common base metals are brass, stainless steel, and copper alloy. The plating layer provides the desired color and finish while also protecting the base metal from oxidation and skin contact reactions.
Plating thickness is measured in microns (μm) and directly impacts durability and cost. Standard fashion jewelry plating ranges from 0.5μm to 3μm, while premium pieces may use 5μm or thicker. For reference, 1 micron of 18K gold plating adds approximately $0.15-0.30 per piece to the manufacturing cost, depending on the piece's surface area.
Common Plating Types and Their Characteristics
18K gold plating delivers a warm, rich yellow tone that closely resembles solid gold. It's the most popular choice for fashion jewelry and performs well across all price points. Rose gold plating achieves its distinctive pink hue through a gold-copper alloy and has surged in popularity over the past five years. Rhodium plating provides a bright, white finish with excellent tarnish resistance, commonly used for silver-toned pieces and as a protective layer over sterling silver.
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating is a newer technology gaining traction in fashion jewelry. Unlike traditional electroplating, PVD bonds at a molecular level, creating an extremely durable finish that resists scratching and fading. While PVD costs 30-50% more than traditional plating, it offers 5-10x longer wear life, making it attractive for premium fashion jewelry lines.
Quality Control for Plating
When evaluating a manufacturer's plating quality, request salt spray test results — industry standard is 24-48 hours for fashion jewelry. Ask about their pre-treatment process, as proper cleaning and activation of the base metal surface is crucial for plating adhesion. Inspect sample pieces after wearing them for several days to assess real-world durability. A reputable manufacturer will stand behind their plating quality with clear warranty terms.
